Eating advice - terminal patient not receiving 'treatment'

Hi - My father has advanced liver and eye cancer. He is finding foods taste funny and is not enojyong eating. He has months left rather than years and is experiencing pain and sleeping a lot. He is currently at home and still fairly active. He is on painkillers, codeine, I think but is not having radiotherapy on any other treatment.

I'm looking for any advice on eating drinking so that his last few months may be a bit more enjoyable. Ive read a few tips about trying tart food, new foods (as then you can't compare with what things used to taste like) etc but would like to know anything more. A lot of advice seems to be for patients receiving treatment. Thank you.

  • Hi,

I can only advise from personal experience of caring for relatives with terminal cancer. For nutritional purposes try food's high in dairy and sugar - rice pudding with cream and honey, custard, ice cream, crumpets with cheese or honey etc. The taste buds can change and prefer tart tastes so try crumpets with lemon curd, lemon meringue pie, lemon ice cream or yoghurt etc. Even boiled sweets like sherbet lemons may taste ok for him.

I hope you can find some foods that your father can enjoy.
