Bowel cancer spread to peritoneum

3 months ago my dad had emergency surgery to remove a huge cancer in his colon. They also removed his entire colon leaving him with an ileostomy bag. He found out that the cancer had spread to the peritoneum and that there is no cure or treatment, just palliative chemo. Last week he was rushed back in with kidney failure. This is now sorted but he’s taking strong paracetamol and oral morphine for the pain he’s getting in his stomach. He just says that it hurts and that it must be from the surgery.

Coukd it be pain from his cancer? He’s so useless and just keeps taking pain killers! I don’t know how to help him.

Many thanks,

Orchard Corner.

  • Hi there ...

So sorry your dad's having such a hard time .. I know cancer plus those ops plus chemo is enough to knock a rhino for six .. he must be in so much pain right now .. if I were you I'd get strait on to his oncology team / G P   as soon as poss ... tell them how your dad is ...and get as much help as you can .. Marie Currie is brilliant when you get a terminal diagnosis .. both emotional and practical help ... give them a ring too ..

I expect he has no energy right now .. you sound an amazing son /daughter ... my heart goes out to you .. hold on in there .. let us know if you get help ... as that info may help others .. Chrissie x

  • Please make sure he is comfy speak to McMillan they will be with you every step of the way giving advice and support.  He should have a specialist nurse who also may help.  It is very hard when the person doesn't admit to how the cancer is affecting them they are often in denial but just knowing you are there would be comfort him stay strong .  Thinking of you I know how hard it is
