My husband

My husband went through an 8 hour operation for cancer on his tongue and in his neck.He has been in intensive care since he came out of theatre on Monday, he was moved to the Head & Neck ward last night. So that is good news.

The worst part for me is only seeing him  for about an hour a day because unfortunately he has had to go to hospital about 2 hours away traveling. I don’t mind the traveling, but when they stick to the visiting times it makes it shorter for me. And I am missing him so much. And it was terrible seeing him with all the drains, wires and cannula’s and he has tracheotomy . And he’s had skin graft from his leg onto his tongue, so his leg is giving him a lot of pain. But he still gave me a smile when I saw him for the first time the following day of his operation.

I got upset yesterday because it had taken me 2 hours traveling and when I rang the bell to go onto the unit , I was told I would have to wait because they would putting him back into bed. It was visiting time so that meant I was missing precious time with him before I would have to leave to go home. It’s because we have no car of our own and I have to rely on public transport. And I don’t want to ask for lifts from friends because they say ask but when you mention anything they say that they can’t help you today because they have other commitments. So I don’t bother asking any one.

i feel really  down at the moment because I am missing him so very much I just want him home. I feel that when your love ones have cancer they shouldn’t restrict you visiting times as much.

And we still haven’t been told if they were able to have got all the cancer.

The next hurdle will be having the radiotherapy.

  • Hi there Ronnie62, I am really sorry about your husbands diagnosis and hope that when he has the radiotherapy it will be less travelling for you.  My journey was over 2 hours when my husband had surgery for lung cancer.  Luckily the hospital had accommodation and I was able to stay there, I had to pay £75 per night but it was well worth it for us.  I was at his bedside from 8.30am till 9pm and I really felt that it aided his recovery. Luckily his chemo is only half an hour from home and he is able to drive there.

i do hope that he will be home soon, keep your chin up and take care of yourself.

  • Oh dear, these restrictions sound like something from 50 years ago!  Having said this I don't know how the hospital restrictions work and why.  Please do try to speak with them to explain your situation - perhaps they could relax the rules a bit when necessary?    Don't mock my next suggestions (well, you can if  you want) but you could perhaps set up a *** page; nothing major just enough to get taxis to and from the hospital while your husband is there.    I have taken a look at the website and there is nothing to stop you doing this for whatever reason.  I attach a link.  Please also continue to come here and chat with us about your hopes and fears.  Annie
