My wonderful husband has cancer

I am a mum of 3 amazing children and wife to a wonderful husband. 3 months ago my husband was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. This came out of the blue as he does not drink smoke or anything else that is associated with this type of cancer. He is fit and always looking after himself. he has Stage 4 and has started chemotherapy. He is not in a good place and I do not know what to do. I am trying to stay and be positive. But it is proving quite difficult at the moment. could really do with some advice.

 Thanks in advance

  • Hi

I am in a similar position. I am so stressed having to keep my 'everything will be all right's face on while feeling someone has ripped my heart out my chest. Maybe we could support each other through this. Maria

  • Hi Maria

that would be great. I feel guilty talking about it all thetime at work. Have to stop my self. Knowing that we are ina similar position  is heartening. I am still in disbelief. took him shopping today  for about 20 minutes. he was really tired. But he knows it is for his betterment.

  • Any recipes would be more than welcome. he is eating little bits after his irst round of chemo. Want him to put on some weight before the next round which is next week.

  • Hi Supermum

Everyday is different. My hubby isn't really aware of his prognosis. He knows it's incurable but just not how serious it is, although he has been told. He had his assessment yesterday which I also find scary. Today..... well he's out cutting the hedges.  It's like a rollercoaster. Good you got out together even though it was for a short time.

    Keep in touch.

  • Hi,

We sort of reversed the approach to weight loss recipes - added grated cheese, butter, cream etc. and used full fat milk for everything.

Smooth peanut butter, banana and full fat milk blitzed was nice. Fresh strawberries or blueberries  blitzed with milk and/or milk. Old-fashioned chicken soup, vegetarian moussaka (when I was able to keep solids down), poached fish with boiled rice - almost anything bland and boring as my taste buds were wrecked for weeks.

MacMillan have literally hundreds of chemo-friendly recipes at www.macmillan.org.uk/.../recipes

    Hope this helps

  • Norman struggled with food and as a wife it gets hard to know what to feed them.  He wouldn't have smoothie or anything like that, he's a red meat man!  So I  used to look at the ready meals on offer in M & S and buy anything I thought would tempt him.  I also put my bossy head on and said if he didn't eat what I gave him I would make him have a horrible shake, this always worked.  It's really like having a child and coaxing them to eat, so revert back to bossy Mummy mode.  Have you received the extra money available to cancer sufferers.  Speak to your Mc Millan nurse and if you're entitled they write a report and that's sent off, it's then back dated to diagnosis and paid into your bank account.  This helps with extra food costs,  heating etc.  Also get a free pass for parking from your chemo unit which you are also entitled to. Hope this helps! Carol.

  • Thank you so much.

Will try the banan and peanut butter smoothie. fingers crossed he likes it.

  • Hi

Haven't been in touch. My hubby had a bad week. We're going to try  the 90day treatment plan. We would try anything.
