My Supergrain Dad

Hi all,

I'm actually writing about my dad. He is now 61 with a PSA of 5.5

I'm a nurse myself but I've specialised in a very different area unfortunately and am at a bit of a loss with the day to day recommendations in urology. He has always been and continues to be, an incredibly active man. He's a dry stone waller, fit as a fiddle with a BMI of 21 and eats an incredibly healthy, mainly plant-based diet. That said, our family history of malignancies is pretty poor.

I keep reading that being active & introducing more vegetables into the diet is important but as he already does that, are there any other lifestyle changes we should be looking at?

Thanks in advance guys, I hope this wasn't too long.

  • Hello Beckazod,

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and let you know that I have asked our nurses to have a look at your post and give you suggestions relevant to urology.

It's great that your dad is eating healthily - I found it funny that you call him your supergrain dad :)

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Beckazod,

I am one of the cancer information nurses and am posting at Lucie's request.

There are several health benefits from eating a well balanced diet, being active and keeping a healthy body weight, but despite research, at the moment it isn't certain what can really help to prevent prostate cancer. You can read about this on our website at this link and on the website of another charity Prostate Cancer UK here.

It doesn't sound like there are any additional things that your dad needs to do over and above the healthy lifestyle he already has. Aside from prostate cancer this sort of lifestyle can reduce the risk of other cancers and diseases and improve well being so it is certainly worth keeping it up.

There is more information about the causes of cancer and how to prevent it on our website and the NHS has information about living well

As you probably know your dad's PSA is above the normal reference range so I assume that he is taking advice from his doctor about this.

If you or your dad want to talk anything over please give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
