Dads ending Stages of pancreatic cancer

Hello, new to this here. My dad is reaching the final stages of pancreatic cancer and it’s happened all so quickly. From the diagnosis to the cancer spreading and now the kidneys are beginning to shut down. It’s such a shock to watch what cancer can do to the body. Now in this time, all I wanna do is make my dad comfortable and make him feel as safe as possible. Between his jumping and mumbling in pain, I don’t know what else I can do to keep him calm. It’s heartbreaking to not know what I can do. For now I just lay next to him, pressing his pain pump, giving him fluids if I can. Just in need of some advice. Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Frances,

I am so so sorry to hear about your father, I went through a similar thing with my grandma and it is so distressing when you feel there is nothing you can do. All I did was sit beside her holding her hand, talking to her and playing her favourite music which seemed to really help. It was heartbreaking to say the least, one thing I will be able to give a little advice on is the amount of pain relief he is on, my grandma was in pain at the end because we think the nurses gave her the wrong amount of pain relief which was hard, I would double check if you havent already with a nurse or doc about his pain relief just to be sure if he seems in alot of pain. When it gets to this point in their journey I think what your doing is amazing and im sure means the world to him to have you by his side. If you are still unsure and would like maybe better advice call up one of your nurses or docs and ask them if there is anything else you can do for him to make him more comfortable. I'm sorry I cant be of more help but I am sending big hugs your way and dont forget we are always about on here if you need a chat or a vent.
