Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade 4

Hi,

My Mum was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade 4 in May this year. She has since undergone suregry to remove as much of the Tumour as possible with the sugeon informing that he removed all that he could see.

My mum seemed to recover from the surebry pretty quickly and and finished both the Chemo and Radiotherapy treatment around 4-6 weeks ago.

She seemed to go through the treatment fairly easily and took it in her stride. However since the treaement has stopped she had developed really bad anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Is this normal?

The doctor has presceribed anti-depressants which havent worked and she become a bit detached. Her speech is slow, complains of having no energy and is strating to sleep a lot.

Is this signs of recurrence of the tumour?

The Consultants have put back any addition chemo until her strength health improves. Her first follow up scan will not be taken for a few months.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Neil

  • Hi Neil and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear your mum is having a bit of a tough time since finishing treatment 4 - 6 weeks ago.

I think quite a few members here on the forum have initially found it difficult to adjust after having treatment, and the thoughts you've mentioned above are quite normal as you can see here, but hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and thoughts with you.

Anti depressants can take a little while to work - usually about 4 - 6 weeks - before you see any changes so try to allow some more time to see if they are helping your mum, but if you are concerned about your mum's speech pattern, lack of energy and increased sleeping do let her doctor know so they can keep an eye on her. They will also be able to answer your question as to whether this is indicative of a possible recurrence so do have a chat with them when you can to discuss your concerns.

    Best wishes to you both,
