My mom

hello everyone, I’m new here and i would like to ask for some advise if anyone could help at all

my mom was diagnosed with bowel cancer in may of this year and had her operation to remove the tumor in July

it was a big shock to all the family and in all the chaos we didn’t even think to ask what grade the cancer was or how bad, it had been removed but my mom was recommended to have chemotherapy in case the cancer had spread to any lymph nodes, however after her first chemotherapy session it went to badly for her that she was hospitalised and almost caught pneumonia after a chest infection, and after such a traumatic time she’s scared to have any further treatment

I’m so worried and although it sent her sick I’d like her to try the chemo again to give her the best chance of a full recovery and I just wondered has anyone else had similar feelings with a loved one and what’s the best thing to say? Thank you very much for reading

  • Hello Daisy,

Thanks for sharing your story and I can imagine it hasn't been easy for you or your mum recently. Perhaps next time you speak to your mum's consultant you could ask what grade the cancer was and you could also maybe talk to them about what happened to your mum when she had her first chemotherapy session and whether there is anything that can be done so that it doesn't happen again in the future or to minimize possible side effects. I can completely understand why your mum is feeling terrified at the moment of having treatment and ending up again in hospital so hopefully her medical team can talk to her and reassure her that the benefits of her having chemotherapy will outweigh any possible risks or side effects.

I hope that some of our members who have had a similar experience of chemotherapy will come along and share their story with you. Others may have had similar feelings as yourself in relation to a loved one and I hope they will also come and tell you how they talked about it all with their loved one.

You are, of course, also welcome to give our nurses a ring on this free number if you live in the UK 0808 800 40 40. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. They may well have some interesting suggestions for you to help you have this conversation with her mum and with her medical team.

    Best wishes,
