mum was diagnosed with skin cancer

My mum is my best friend and im so scared to lose her. she just got two moles removed, however we will only get results back in 12 days. I'm terrified i cant sleep i cry so much. thats because my grandma died of cancer about 8 years ago and that left a significant effect on me, because the doctors said shes was going to be fine.

my mum is so calm and so excited for our holidays together, but im just so scared its unbelievable. i have no knowledge of skin cancer, so if anyone could tell me about it that would be great.

thank you for whoever is reading this.

  • Hello evelinav and welcome.  I am attaching some information about skin cancer from this website which I hope will calm you  a bit.  I realise you will have to wait for the results before you know what you are dealing with here.  The page I have attached refers to non-melanoma skin cancer but also has a  link (near the top of the page) to melanoma.

Let your mum enjoy her holiday (but not too much time in the sun!) and try not to spoil your holiday by worrying about things that may not be happening.  But do feel free to come back and chat with us especially when you know the outcome of the tests.  Annie

  • Hi,

I can understand your fear for your mum, especially if you know nothing about skin cancer. If you have read the link provided above you will know a little more about melanoma, meanwhile this is my experience of this cancer which I have had, on & off, for 22 years. I was first diagnosed Stage 1 in 1996 and after surgery & regular check ups I was discharged after 5 years. 13 years after initial diagnosis it returned in the lymph nodes of my groin & pelvis which meant I was now Stage 3. More surgery & regular check ups (which I am still having) but I am still here, disease free, after 9 years.

A diagnosis of melanoma isn't as desperate as it once was as there are now many more treatments & research continues apace. If your mum is diagnosed with mm it will hopefully be early stage (1 or 2) which have very good stats for long term survival. Even if she is diagnosed Stage 3 or 4 there are lots of treatments etc that are prolonging the survival for many years so please take heart.

Try to enjoy your holiday with your mum while she waits for the results. Share lots of girly time to take both your minds off it & then hopefully the results, once in, won't be as bad as you fear. Let us know how you & mum get on.

    Kind regards

    Angie
