Hello all :0)

Good evening,

Just thought I would come on here to get some support and advice :) My mum was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer yesterday and, as this is very new to us as a family, I would like some advice about how to support both mum and dad. She's 73 and is a very strong (and stubborn, dad would say!) woman and I don't want to be over-protective or patronising of her as she is so independant. Her surgeon has allowed her to go on her pre-planned holiday and she will meet with the oncologist when she gets back. I'm conscious that both mum and dad will need the help and support of both my brother and I - dad is lost without her and vice versa.

We're a very close family and will always be there for them both but any help and advice would be wonderful xxxxxx

  • Hello Janeybear666,

I am so sorry to hear your mum has just been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. You do sound like a wonderfully close family and I am sure it will be  important to your mum to know that you all stand by her side  - even if she is fiercely independent or stubborn as your dad says ;)

It's great that despite the diagnosis your surgeon has given her the green light to go on her holiday - it would have been a shame to miss out on it. I hope she is going somewhere nice!

How caring of you to want to support both your mum and your dad but it's true they will both be glad to know you are there for them. We have some great tips on our website on how to support someone with cancer. But it is important not to forget to take care of another important person, yourself. You can read more about this here and I hope it will be a useful little guide to you and your brother.

Finally, I think you've taken the right steps in joining this forum as many on here have supported or are currently supporting a loved one through cancer and their first hand experience will no doubt be invaluable to you. So I will let them come and say hello to you and share their experience.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Lucie,

Many thanks for your reply! Mum and Dad are in Turkey, so yes, somewhere nice and warm. No doubt they're enjoying themselves as much as they can!.

I've found the forum both informative and a massive comfort, although it's devastating to see how many families and people have been affected by this dreadful disease. Yes, it's wonderful that we're such a close family and I know that we'll all pull together and help each out as much as is humanly possible.

Thank you for the link for my brother and I - its a massive help.

    Warm regards

    Janey x

  • Turkey, that's rather nice! I hope they are having a good time in the circumstances. We're quite lucky with the weather here in the UK too though at the moment.

I am glad you are finding this forum useful and in particular the link I sent you. We're all here for you anytime you feel like chatting to others who know exactly what you're going through as a family.

    Enjoy the nice weather!
