stomach cancer

a realtive has just been diagnosed with stomach cancer. they have been in hospital for three weeks.  in the first week they drained 4 litres of fluid from the stomach. this fluid has now come back and the stomach is very large again but cause of CDIFF doctors say they cant drain the stomach..cause kidney function is low they cant give chemo and they are talking about pallative care. The doctors arw keen to send my aunt home but she doesnt feel ready as is very weak.  any advice?

  • Hello Britney86.

I'm sorry to hear about your Aunt. Has she gone home now or is she still in hospital?

If she's still in hospital then I wonder if it's possible for a family member to request a meeting with the Dr/staff and explain this. It may be that there are other options open to her such as having additional support at home from nurses/carers or some respite time in a hospice until she feels ready. If someone has not already had a chance to discuss this with the team in charge of her care then this is certainly something to ask for.

Do pop back and let us know how things go/are going.

    Best wishes.

sadly my aunt passed away yesterday. there was only 5 weeks from diagnoses to her passing away.  she had the pain for so long but as she had been caring for her husband she forgot to look after herself. it is a lesson to get any symptoms checked out by GP.

  • Hello britney86,

I am so sorry to hear your aunt passed away only 5 weeks after being diagnosed. Your aunt seemed to be such a lovely lady forgetting to look after herself because she was caring for her husband. You are right to put this message out there, that it is important to get any symptoms checked by a GP.

Sincere condolences on behalf of the Cancer Chat team.

    Best wishes,
