Mum has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer

Hello,

my mum has just been diagnosed with T4 N3 M0 lung cancer. We have our first app on Friday and every second feels like an hour. I had been expecting this for weeks and so had time to get my head around the situation and whilst I feel strong I still have times where I just feel like someone is sitting on my chest and I can’t breath.

my Mum originally went to the docs because of swollen ankles. She is an ex smoker and I’d noticed her cough had come back. She had a number of tests and we suspected a heart condition due to the swollen limbs. We then noticed her fingers were clubbing and she has experienced fatigue and drenching night sweats.

my Mum has had minimal weight loss, but I can see her cough getting worse by the day. She reports no pain at all.

i just feel completely at a loss. I am trying to keep things as normal as possible for as long as possible.

i would welcome any advice at all

thank you x

  • Hello nik138,

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum.  I know there are many here who have been in your situation and I hope they will be along soon to share their story with you. When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, it can be a complete shock for everyone and I hope you have support around you to help you along the way.

How did the first appointment go on Friday and what did they tell you? If you have any questions that remain answered following this first appointment - it can be a lot to take in! - don't hesitate to give our nurses a call on this free number (if you live in the UK) 0808 800 4040 (their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm) .

    Best wishes,
