Transitional Cell Cancer (TCC) in ureter

Hello,

My Nan (82) has been diagnosed with TCC as they have found a tumour in her ureter. It was unexpected and very sudden. She has been diagnosed with Alzhiemer's for many years which has really deteriorated since the new diagnosis.

It's been a hectic ride of tests, scans and appointments but she had her first attempt at a biopsy and laser last week. Unfortunately it failed and the tube was perforated. No biopsy or laser was able to happen. They're hoping to re-try in 6 weeks but the only treatment option we have been offered is to repeat the same operation every 3 months after the next one, in hope to try and stop it spreading.

We are struggling with 1) not having a grade of the cancer and everything being so unknown  2) the toll that this operation has had on her, she has physically and mentally significantly declined (had a catheter since the op now) 3) with no prognosis (although the surgeon said 18 months if successful with the 3 month ops, if not 'a lot lot less?'

And that's only the half of it!

With it being such a rare cancer I would appreciate ANY advice, support, experience etc from anyone.

Thank you so much

  • As I noticed this is the first time you posted on the forum I just wanted to stop by to welcome you, caits29.

I'm sorry to hear about your nan, what an incredibly difficult situation this must be for all of you.

I believe many people here will be able to relate to your problem as they also have gone through similar experiences with their loved ones affected by cancer and I hope you will very soon hear from them.

Also, we have a fantastic team of cancer nurses who you can ask questions about your nan's cancer type if you feel speaking to someone medically trained might help. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm.

    Stay strong, caits29.

Best wishes to you and your nan,
