Dad after treatment - small cell lung cancer

Hi,

So dad has been through intense chemo and radiotherapy (both to the chest and the brain) since being diagnosed with lung cancer back in September 17. He did ever so well, still continued to work through treatment, ate all round him, gained weight, breathing eased drastically and just looked healthy again. Scan results have since come back and all in all, look pretty promising (As far as cancer goes) and 3 weeks ago - received the final after treatment scan which the professor was more than pleased about.

However, he has since took a very downhill spiral - exceptionally tired and spends about 20 hours a day in bed. Feeling very weak & grouchy, not eating thus has lost a fair amount of weight, absolutely no energy what so ever, and suffering with back and jaw ache.

We always knew that the radiotherapy could have long term affects (in fact they stipulated 6-8 weeks after treatment he could be worn out) but it doesnt seem like hes getting any better and is in fact getting worse.

Has anybody else experienced/or know of anyone who has experienced similar after affects? Is it nromal? Will it improve, or is it a bad sign?

Any feedback/advise would be exceptionally appreciated.

Thanks so much

  • Welcome to the forum Shaunax although I'm sorry for the reason you are posting.

Have you contacted your dad's medical team to let them know about the downward turn he has taken? If not, do make sure you touch base as they will be in the best position to tell you if this is anything to be concerned about. By doing this you'll also be able to discuss your worries and concerns so do get in touch with them when you can.

Hopefully other members who have had experience of SCLS or intense chemo and radiotherapy will be along soon to share their experiences with you but in the mean time I just wanted to share some information we have on our website about radiotherapy as well as tiredness with cancer which I hope will be of some help to you at this time.

I hope your dad gets through this rough patch and his recovery improves.

    Best wishes to you both,
