Introduce myself

hi

today we found out that my Nan has lung cancer. We lost my grandfather last August to lung cancer after fighting it for 6 months. The specialist has told us that my Nan is too ill for a biopsy and chemotherapy as her physical health is poor. My Nan also has copd. She isn’t in any pain at the moment but the doctor has said if she gets pain they will give her radiotherapy. I just want some information on this as I’m very confused as it’s not the same as my grandfather as he did have a biopsy and 1 lot of chemotherapy which unfortunately did not work for him.

I would be greatful for any information

thanks

    Hi Vikki,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your nan and grandfather. No two cancers are exactly the same and different people deal with them differently too. I am not a doctor, just a breast cancer warrior, but I suspect that your grandfather may have been in slightly better health than your nan. This would explain why his care team decided to do a biopsy and offered him chemotherapy. Is your nan a  little frailer than he was at this stage? Sometimes, it is better not to carry out any invasive procedures if this is the case. Her COPD won't be helping matters either.

Chemotherapy requires a lot of stamina to get through and, I'm sure that while your nan is not in any pain, her care team will not want to make things any worse for her. It must be particularly hard for you to go through this all again, so soon after losing your grandfather. Do you have good support from your family and friends.

All you can do is to be there for her, to love and support her as best you can. If you can try to keep conversations about her cancer open, as this is a frightening time for her.

Please stay in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
