Sepsis after Beacopp chemo - stage 4 hodgkins lymphoma

Im very concerned about the fact that my family member has just been told he has sepsis. Hes back in hospital but the info im getting is 3rd and 4th hand as i dont live nearby. Sepsis to me is very very serious. Does anyone have any epxerience of this please? Not even necessarily related to this cancer, just getting it during chemo. id judt like to understand more ... thank you

  • Hi Dee,

I had sepsis and it was a case of operate or die within 24 hours. My family did the whole goodbye thing as it was touch and go.

Luckily I'd finished chemo but had I had a stem cell transplant, which I'd turned down, I'd not haqve survived.

I've got multiple myeloma and when it's active, am extremely immunocompromised.

Can't really give you any info about sepsis with other cancers or other chemo but my niece, a diabetic, also had sepsis and was told if she'd waited to go into hozzy, she'd have died.

As far as I know, it's treated with various IV antibiotics.

Hope this helps and that your family member pulls through.

    Best Regards

    Taff

  • Hello Dee , I am one of the nurses. I am sorry to learn about your family member.

Sometimes as a result of chemotherapy, the number of white cells in the blood fall.  This is temporary but for a while cause a reduction in immunity so if someone picks up an infection they have next to no resistance and the infection can become serious.

Sepsis is a serious complication of infection, so it is concerning, but many people if treated promptly with antibiotics will fully recover, and as their white blood cells increase will be in a better position to fight the infection. I hope your family member is doing okay in hospital where I am sure he is having good treatment.

It is so difficult when you don’t have the full picture,  I hope you get some news soon.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
