Diet

Doctor has said today to my father in law whos down to 6st and is not eating has said not to worry about eating as it just feeds the tumour in his oesophagus. Surely this is ridiculous advice?

Hi Honeyseed and a very warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am sorry to hear that your father-in-law is not eating at present.

I am not a medic, but I cannot believe that his doctor has advised him not to worry about eating. Did he offer him any build up drinks to take as meal replacements? These can be prescribed by his GP. There is quite an assortment of them. Some taste awful, whilst others are quite palatable. We got a mixed tray delivered first time around for my mother-in-law and now we just get the make that she liked best. She has been taking only these for the past 3 months and, although very frail, she is still with us.

Why not phone the nurses on this site to see what they would suggest? Their number is 0808 800 4040. The number is free and the nurses are available Mon - Fri fro 9.00am - 5.00 pm. They should be able to give you better advice than I can.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • IF his doctor said that, it would be ridiculous advice.

Did you hear the doctor use those words, or is this second hand? Sometimes us patients mis-hear what we are told or, worse, we say things to well-meaning relatives just to get them off our backs.

    Good luck

    Dave
