Concerned

Hi All

My mum was diagnosed with kidney cancer 7 weeks ago and since has had 2 extra CT scans and has seen the kidney consultant twice. However at the latest appointment he said 'Right I'll see you in 3 months time and maybe we'll take a biopsy then'.

The lesion/tumour/growth has grown in the time taken to get all the scans. What was encapsulated within the kidney is now in and out of the kidney and the consultant is more concerned about not using the word cancer. Sorry if I sound a little irrate, but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this sort of lapsydaisical attitude? I've read a lot about catching kidney cancer early for best survival rates as it masticizes quickly so do you think we need to ask for a second opinion?

  • Hi there ... hmmmm seems weird a Dr not wanting to mention the word cancer ... poor you, it must feel really confusing ... maybe give free phone number a ring on here or McMillan. . With your mum's consent, you could ring her oncology team and ask them to explain why the wait ... keep pen and paper handy so you can right down what they say .. if you tell them just how worried you are ... firm but calmly and don't settle to be robbed off ... I'm so glad my oncology team are wonderfull ...

Let us know how it goes ... Chrissie x

  • Hi Chriss

Thanks for the words of advice. I'll give CR a ring. it's just very frustrating. In fact her GP and the consultant at our local hospital are a little non-plussed at the situation. My mum's now wondering is it because of her age (she's 70). Cheers Nicky

  • Hi there Nicky .. I'm pretty sure they still have to do everything, no matter what their age ... if your still not happy, I'm sure you could put a complaint in writhing firstly to hospital admin ... don't let anyone fob you off ... l know they are stretched to the limit, but you only get one mum and sometimes we need to fight in their corner ... and a second opinion is quite reasonable ... be firm but calm ...
