    Hi Mr Noobie,

A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Things never come in ones do they? Have you any idea where he contracted bird flu from? I am not a medic, so I cannot answer your question. I understand that bird flu is different from the flu that we are more familiar with in the UK and believe that some doctors now seem to think that the annual flu jab can help to protect from bird flu, but I’m not sure that such thoughts are universal yet. Why not phone the ward that your dad is in and ask this question?

You could also contact the nurses on this site for their opinions. I am sure that you are anxious to see your dad as soon as possible, so you might find it better to phone them on 0808 800 4040. This number is Freephone from UK landlines. They are open 9.00 - 5.00 Mon – Fri. It can take a few days to get a response from them on the forum.

I do hope that you can get back in to see your dad very soon. Please let us know the outcome. We are always here for you if you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hello. Mrnoobie69.  Your poor dad - how unlucky could he be; if he didn't have enough problems he has now fallen foul of bird flu which is pretty hard to catch.  I have tried to find up-to-date information for you about the various strains of bird flu which have been found in the UK  but most of the information is not up to date and at the time of writing most of them were still saying there were no human cases in the UK!

As Jolamine says the best thing to do is to check with your dad's doctors; with bird flu he is probably being treated in isolation.  I am so sorry that this is an extra stress for your dad and yourself. Annie
