Children and A L L.

Our son had A L L when he was quite young, he was diagnosed at 3 yrs old and had treatment until he was seven. He's almost 16 now. Today a friend posted a picture on Facebook about the son of a friend of hers, he'd just been diagnosed with A L L  and had recently been to surgery to have a line inserted into his chest for his chemo drugs. Not unusual but here's the thing, our son has red hair, the young guy in todays Facebook picture has red hair. When we were going to the hospital when our son was getting treatment we noticed that quite a few other red heads were also receiving treatment on the days we were there. We were offered the chance to go on holiday to the " Give kids the world " holiday centre in Florida just after our sons treatment was finished, whilst there and in the swimming pool one afternoon we struck up a conversation with two other families who's sons were undergoing A L L treatment at the time. Both of their sons had red hair. Is there a link between red hair and A L L. We cannot be the only parents to have noticed this. I would really like to ask an expert about this but really don't know how to find one. I suspect that the cause is genetic but I'm an engineer and not a doctor/geneticist.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, JP1.

It is an interesting question that you asked but not being a doctor nor having a medical background I'm afraid I can't give you an answer.

I found some information on our website about the risks and causes of ALL that might be of interest and if you feel like having a read you can find out more by clicking on the link above. However, if this doesn't answer your question why don't you give our cancer nurses a ring and see if they can shed some light? They are available on this number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday, between 9 a.m - 5 p.m.

    Best wishes,
