My father was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with Liver cancer which unfortunately had spread to his lungs , he's been told that due to underlying medical conditions ( emphysema and cirrhosis) and the aggresive nature of the disease that there is no treatment available apart from palliative care, with the oncologist saying that his life expectancy was a maximum of 3 months

His wish was to be nursed at home , which we as a family agreed to and have been giving him round the clock care since he left hospital almost 3 weeks ago.

His  well being seems to be veering between very good to poor almost daily , he has problems breathing and is on oxygen for 18 hours a day and he is becoming frailer , however today for instance he is sitting up , eating ice cream and generally looking a lot better than he has done,

I dont really know what the question is I want to ask, I and the rest of the family, due to the fact that he is extremely medicated and he is at home, have no idea as to what is happening to him, sometimes we think he has weeks, sometimes I can see him surviving months, I am sure that this is not a new occurence to sufferers of this condittion, but could anyone share their experience with me , they not knowing what to expect is the worst thing

Thank you

  • Hi Gary.  I am so sorry that you and your family are going through this. It is so heart breaking to watch a loved one suffer.  It makes you feel so helpless.   I had an uncle that was diagnosed with kidney failure and wanted to come home to be taken care of.  We brought him home and a hospice nuse came everyday to check on him and give us updates on him.  They provided us with a booklet that had a lot of information about what to expect.  Maybe you could ask his health care person if they have something like that?

My thoughts are with you and your family.
