Esophageal cancer

Hi all

My mother in law is 90 and obviously fairly frail. She was diagnosed in September with this cancer and her care is palliative only as treatment is not suitable due to her age and frailty.

She is having difficult swallowing now and we are wondering what to expect and how long this palliative process can be?

she has stated that she’s had a long life and wants to pass away. We want to reassure her that she isn’t likely to be in a lot of pain and it isn’t going to be years of being unable to eat and being housebound.

  • Hello Karen17, I just wanted to stop by and welcome you to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law, this sounds like a difficult time for everyone and I can appreciate how you are trying to help here.

I had a look around for information on palliative care and found this page on our website which might be of interest, it addresses a bit of the subject and if you look on the right left side, under 'related links' there is more information that you might find useful.

Our team of cancer nurses can be reached too if you feel like talking to someone on the phone about your mother-in-law's situation. they're available on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
