Radium 223

Hi all,

My Dad is 62 years old and was dianosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer 3 years ago. He underwent hormone therapy for the first 2 years, 10 months of chemo, followed by 2.5 months of what was supposed to be another 10 months of another round of chemo, and in May 2017 was diagnosed with Metastatic Castrate Resistent Prostate Cancer (Prostate cancer in his bones) and started Radium 223. He is has had 4 treatments, so still has 2 treatments left. His pain comes in rounds; usually the week following his Radium 223 treatment, his pain is extremely severe. Then he gets about 1-2 weeks of relief before it starts to wear off again; his "up swings" as we call them, have become a bit longer with every treatment, which is encouraging.

My question, to anyone familiar with this treatment, is how long after the 6th and final treatment is the pain subsided? At what point can we expect his pain to come back in full force?

  • Hi Tub,

I'm sorry to hear that earlier this year your dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in his bones but I'm glad to hear treatment was available and that his "up swings" from the Radium 223 are getting longer.

Your dad's medical team will be in the best position to answer your questions but I just wanted to make you aware of a previous discussion we have had about this treatment which I hope will be of use to you. There is also a member - [@sarahjane]‍ - who's father also had Radium223. It's been a while since they've been on the forum but now that I've tagged them in this post they will hopefully pop by to share their father's experience with you.

I hope this helps and that your dad's recovery time from the treatment continues to improve.

    Kind regards,
