Stage 4 squamous cell

my wife (jessica, 32 yrsold) has been battling sstage four squamous cell with distant metastes in the lungs and lymph nodes now for 16 months. She wasnt a smoker or big drinker, so the diagnoses came as a big surprise. Weight loss has become a serious factor-- shes about 40 kilos/ 90 lbs. at what point should we start taking to her Dr and schedule a break on chemo so she can get some rest and gain back some weight? They seem to think she can go for several more months, but I'm not so sure and they aren't here at home every day seeing what i see.

    Hi Levi,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am so sorry to hear about your wife's diagnosis. It seems so unfair to get a diagnosis like this when she is not a smoker.

Have you talked to her care team about her weight loss? If she is only about 40 kilos, I would advise you to start talking to them straight away. I don't know whether they will want her to continue with chemo whilst taking some build up drinks, or whether they'll review her chemo schedule.

Just a word of warning. Some of these build up drinks taste foul. So if your wife doesn't like them, she can always try others until she gets one that is more palateable. These are available on prescription and her nurse or dietician should be able to supply them for her.

It must be heartbreaking seeing someone so young fade away like this.

I hope that you speak to her consultant soon and that they can help you to turn things around.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she is getting on. We are always here for both of you whenever you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine
