Personal care

My mum has always taken care of her appearance but since her illness she won't shower even with help? She almost seems afraid of the water? She has stage 4 breast cancer is this part of the condition? I don't want her personal hygiene to decline but I don't want to force her into doing it when she clearly doesn't want to. Does anyone have experience of anything similar? Thanks

  • Hello

Has she said why she doesn't want to wash?

My mum has advanced lung cancer in both lungs and 3 brain tumours.

She hasnt been able to get upstairs for about a month now. So it's been a strip wash downstairs every other day with help from me. Maybe this could be a way for your mum to wash. Encourage her to wash herself but reminder her you're there to give a hand.

Maybe try different soaps and smells to make it more relaxing?

Sometimes my mum doesn't feel like washing her full body. We literally do head to toe. So if she doesnt feel up to it we just do under arms, under breasts and between her legs.

    Hope this helps x

  • Hi there ... it's just a thought but I've had mastectomy 7weeks ago and I've been told some find it really hard to look at scar where our boobs used to be ... so maybe having a shower might be too much as you have to look at there ... just a thought ... it's a shame it's so hard to talk to the ones we love ... and it would be so much easier knowing ... then trying to guess ... hope you can find a way ...

take care ... regards Chrisie X
