My brother has a rare cancer

Hello. My name is Ester and I'm new on this forum. My brother (25) has a rare cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. It was diagnosed in May 2016. He's had surgery, chemo (different kinds, nothing worked) and radiation. His tumors are growing rapidly and he is now waiting to start immuno therapy. I'm devastated. Seeing him suffer, seeing my parents suffer, not knowing what's next. He is my best friend and loved by many other people. I don't know what to say or do. That's why I'm here. Has anyone here had a similar experience, with a sibling having cancer? Thank you!

Ester

    Hi Ester,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear about your brother’s diagnosis.  It must be very hard for you knowing that none of his treatment has worked so far, for such a young man. I see that he is now starting on Immunotherapy and I sincerely hope that this is more successful for him.  I lost my Mum to cancer and have had it myself for the past 7 years. I lost my brother when he was 24 to an accident. This broke my Mum’s heart and she never got over his death to the day she died.

It is only natural that any parent expects their children to outlive them, but when this doesn’t happen, it is tragic. I think that the best advice I can give you is to be yourself with him. Try to forget that he might be leaving you sooner than expected. Try instead to deal with things day-by-day. You will also need to support your parents through this nightmare.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of your family and, I do hope that things settle down for you when you are a little further along your brother’s cancer journey.

Please keep us informed of how he gets on. Remember that there is always someone here whenever you fel like talking.

    Kid regards,

    Jolamine xx
