Advice please

My husband has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has recently started his chemo (on day 2), he's feeling quite unwell and struggling to eat anything and just about has water - any help/advice from those who're going through it would be much appreciated. Thank you

  • Sorry not got advice but just wanted to send you big hug xx

  • I'm looking after my mum who has secondary cancer in her lungs (bladder cancer). It's very very hard but we had a very frank conversation at the start before she undertook chemo (with her oncologist in the room too) that eating is so so important to counteract the symptoms of chemo. She said the less you eat the more you get the nausea etc. So to put it simply we are tough with her. I never accept "I don't want anything". Instead I say "what do you fancy?" It can be anything at all and sometimes random but I will pop to the shops and get it for her. I find rich tea biscuits are a good bet and a way of getting calories into them. A lot of people go off tea and coffee when their tastes alters during chemo - my mum likes Capri suns instead. Hopefully your husband will find some food and drink that he can stomach - it really helps as they need the energy to cope with the treatment & I wish you both a lot of luck on your journey xxx

  • Hello,

My mum has secondary liver cancer but was having chemotherapy. She also found it very hard to eat and drink. The oncologist suggested ensure or complan which are high in nutrition and calories.  Any chemist sells them and they are already to drink like a milkshake.  You probably can get them on prescription too if he likes them.  Good luck with your journey.  Please make sure he has something as my Mum has now been taken off chemotherapy as she lost too much weight XxxX love to your both xxx

  • Thank you, I think we all need lots of hugs on this 'cancer treadmill'. Best wishes to you too :) x

  • Thank you, it is hard being the primary 'carer' on several levels, I managed to get some further anti-sickness meds (some that were dissolvable) and he improved. Got rich tea & ginger biscuits which helped and as he felt more like eating, fresh fruit was a favorite :). He did feel better after about 4/5 days but it was tough. He starts the second treatment next week....we'll be more prepared this time!

Wishing you and your mum the very best, hang on in there, my way of coping is simply...one day at a time. xx

  • Thank you, it is hard encouraging our loved ones to eat, my husband also found he has lost his taste for things he used to enjoy. Its been a difficult few weeks, but he's eating better now, we tend to go with the flow and have what he fancies day by day....my thoughts are with you and your mum xx

  • I have been going through this with my husband who has stage 4 lung cancer.  I told the nurses at chemo he was lying about being ok and they gave us protein drinks to take home. He hated these so much I threatened him with them if he didn't eat.   Try soups, soft chicken in sauces, ask him what he fancies or just put a meal in front of him to eat even if he manages a little it's a start.   You have to be strong and a bully and keep at it, it's hard but worth it.  Tell him it's  pointless having chemo if he is going to destroy it by not eating.  Good luck.  I write a daily blog on caring for hubby under Stay strong, it might help you.  Caz

  • So sorry to hear about your husband mine has got kidney and lung cancer. His appetite has been affected too, each day I ask him what he fancies eating and we have whatever it is, usually he has to have food with quite strong flavours. It's a very difficult time for us all watching the one we love go through this and anytime you need a chat please contact me x

  • Hello

My husband has just been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer which is affecting him because he can't swallow solids. He starts chemo in the next fortnight.  I have become a dab hand at getting calories into him.  I start with protein shake powder  (the kind body builders use), then I add skimmed milk powder - an excellent source of vitamins and protein (2 teaspoons), then half a banana, or some strawberries, or mango, or avocado (half).  Then a dollop of peanut butter (again great protein), maple syrup and I blitz it with full fat milk. Nutella is another great addition. As is a scoop of ice cream. I add Aloe Vera juice, syrup of figs, ground up iron supplements.  It looks and tastes like a milk shake,  If I can get it up a straw my darling can drink it.  I take a similar view with savoury stuff, working with creamed soup as a basis and adding milk powder, chicken, prawns, spinach. If anyone is lactose intolerant Rice Dream is a great alternative to milk.  I am going to experiment with pulses tomorrow.

I'm not an expert but I hope the above helps give you some ideas.

    Good luck everyone

    xx
