Dad got diagnosed 6 months ago

Hi,

My dad didn't have any major or obvious symptoms of bowel cancer and so when he did finally go and see the doctor,it had already spread to the liver and was inoperable. He has now completed 6 months of chemotherapy and has been given a 3 month break. He is in his 70's and I am aware that he needs a break from the treatment to recuperate and to alow his body to function without the chemotherapy but if it is the chemotherapy that is keeping him alive, then isn't it risky for him to have 3 months off it?Any views or opinions on this is much appreciated. Sorry if this sounds a stupid question.Thanks.

  • Hi Joseph

I also have bowel cancer that has spread to my liver.

I didn't have any symptoms either it was picked up during tests for a gall stone.

I had the 6 months chemo then a scan and after a couple of weeks break waiting for the scan and results went back onto another 3 months chemo. I think in my case my tumour marker had risen again and I had very few side effects I didn't need a long break.

Did the oncologist give you any idea as to how the cancer had responded to the treatment because I think that may be one factor in making a plan also will he be having blood tests or a scan in the 3 months break.

I think there are so many different factors involved and bowel cancer varies so much from one person to the next it's hard to know if you know what I mean.

Sorry I can't help more but if your worried you could talk to his doctor or if he has a specialist nurse they can tell you how they've made that decision.

Also there is another online forum called "beating bowel cancer forum" which has many many bowel cancer patients and relatives who are way more knowledgeable than me google it and have a read it's really good .

    Love Hayley xx

  • Hi Hayley,

Thanks for your reply. My dad had problems with his hernia and initially got seen about that and it was then that sinister things started to unravel. He has had 2 MRI's,the first showed significant change after 3 months of chemotherapy and the second was reasonably ok too.The mass had shrunk by millimetres. Thanks for your message and advice.
