Advice needed

My 80 year old father was referred to hospital as he had trouble swallowing. Head and neck Consultant discovered a lump on his tonsil. He had biopsy last week and was supposed to see the consultant for the result on Tuesday along with X-ray and ct scan results. The biopsy result wasn't ready for Tuesday and the appointment was put back to next Tuesday. However he has to go to the Haematology department for a test and see a haematology consultant for all his results instead of the Head and neck consultant. Does this mean they think he may have leukaemia? Sorry to be so naive but it is such a worrying time. Original consultant discussed possible treatment for throat before actual diagnosis (radiotherapy) so I don't know what to think. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

  • A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat, Okr. I'm sorry to read about your father having difficulty swallowing, but it's good to hear that he's undergoing tests and will be seen by a consultant soon.

It does sound like a confusing and worrying time; perhaps it would help to talk to someone who's medically trained, like our information nurses? They're available on freephone 0808 800 4040 if you'd like to chat about your father's situation. You can also post questions in our Ask the nurses section of the forum too, but it usually takes about 48 hours to receive a reply, and I notice your dad is going back to the hospital tomorrow.

Hopefully, one of our friendly forum members will be along soon to share their experiences. In the meantime, do feel free to keep posting here and let us know how things go.

Wishing you all the very best,

    Helen
