Weight gain protein shakes

My father is receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy for throats cancer, he's unable to eat or drink and he has a PEG fitted, he's having cisplatin once a week and radiotherapy 5 times a week, would he be able to use the weight gainer shakes for gym use to help him gain weight? He's losing a lot of weight and I just want to help him, any help would be greatly received, thank you!

  • Hi and welcome to the forum.  Whilst I cannot specifically comment on the weight gainer shakes you mention, I can say that my husband was prescribed 'shakes' by his consultant/doctor when he was unable to eat due to his cancer treatment/illness.  They were available both as milk shakes and soups and he found flavours he liked.  I would say that they helped stabilise him for a while (along with steroids in short bursts). I think a word with your father's medical support would certainly be worthwhile to see if these would be okay to use with a PEG (not something my husband was fitted with).

I am sure others will  be along to offer their imput/ideas. All the best. Jules54

  • Jules54 thank you for your reply, it's much appreciated, my dad has the ensure shakes I believe but he's still loosing weight, he's taken them as prescribed but he lost 8lbs in 5 days, I'd just like to give him more calories as the shakes I use for the gym have 1000 calories per serving.

    all the best

  • Hi speak to your dads doctor and get the shakes for him.my mum is on them at the moment they are really good.my mum has just finished her 4 week treatment for lung cancer and she also does not want to eat so will have a shake.Having one shake is the same to having a full meal xxxx

  • Sophie33, thanks for your reply, he has the shakes from the nutritionist but he's still losing weight, he has now been put on an overnight feed and told to take 2 shakes a day, I'm no nutristionist but that doesn't seem enough? He's having 6 weeks off between his next chemo session so I'm at a loss who to speak too, any ideas?

     Regards

  • Hi,

It is some years now since my husband was terminally ill with cancer.  When his appetite/condition deteriorated during palative chemotherapy he was prescribed Ensure milkshakes as meal replacements and when he was able to manage soft foods it was plenty of high calorie  sauces/custards/ice cream and liquidised soups (cream added)..  In conversation with his medical team at all times to manage it as best we could, it was little and often food (up to 8 small meals a day which we found the easiest for him to manage.  Steroids were also given at varying stages.  Hope others may be along to give more recent suggestions as our experience was from 2012/2015.  Regards. • I was just having a look and came across this thread, my dad has metastatic renal cancer and is on chemotherapy since 2017, he has recently lost alot of weight as he has lost his appetite, I have started him on bulk mass gainer protein, because I had the same idea as the original poster. With the protein powder, 1 banana, 30g peanut butter and 400ml whole milk it makes a 1000 calorie shake. I have managed to get him to take one of these each day for the last three days and it has boosted his daily calories, I hope he can maintain this to stop losing and start gaining back some weight. I have posted this for anyone else who comes across this at any point, I know that the original post is a few years old

  • Hi,

I am sure others in similar situations would welcome your imput.  As this is a somewhat historic thread you may well see more of a response by posting a fresh message under your own post.  Hope your efforts help your Dad with his weight issues and best wishes going forward.  Regards Jules54
