Tongue biopsy

Hi,would appreciate a little reassurance if possible ....not for myself, for my dad.  He had a biopsy taken today of his tongue,he's had a sore on his tongue for some time now,it wasn't healing, and so his GP wanted him to have further investigations which has resulted in the biopsy.  To cut a long story short,he had the biopsy which didn't bother him at all, didn't feel a thing, and was quite happy about it when he got home.  However,a couple hours later, his tongue began to swell quite badly,he returned to the oral dept at the hospital, and they've given him Piriton,a steroid, and Amoxil for it.  Now my dad never reacts very well to these things anyway, but I just wondered if this is perfectly normal after a tongue biopsy or if I should be concerned??

Thankyou

  • Welcome to the forum Juju22 although I'm sorry to hear that your dad's tongue began to swell after the biopsy to remove the sore.

There are many members here that have had tongue biopsys and hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their advice and experiences with you. If you use our 'search forum' option above you can find previous discussions by other members to join in on as well but if you would like to talk to someone about this our cancer nurses are just a phone call away. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040 which is free to call from a UK landline.

I hope the medication your dad has been given can combat the swelling and that he has a speedy recovery.

    Best wishes to you both,
