my mum has been prescibed capecitabine

my mum has secondary cancer in her bones from breast cancer. she started chemotherapy for a 12 week course but due to the side effects, losing the sensations in her fingers and feet her oncologist has decided to stop this treatment after 6 weeks.  she has been to the hospital today and is now due to start capecitabine tablets on tuesday next week. what are the success rates of this treatment. has anyone any been on this and what can i expect as i dont live nearby and feel useless to help her.

  • Hello leenkt, I am sorry to read about your mum's illness. I presume many people successfully take capecitabine. My experience was not. I was prescribed it for bowel cancer. After just literally 2 days I felt like I had a tight band around my chest, especially when lying down. I was quickly taken off it and given a different drug. There is some link to cardiac arrest. It interfered with the rhythm of my heart. I was 42 years old then. I don.t want to scare you, your mum will hopefully cope fine like many others do. I am just relaying information on how it affected me. Best regards and i hope your mums situation can improve.
  • Hi,

I was on capecitabane as part of a wider treatment for oesophageal cancer. I had no real side effects.

A friend was on it for several years as part of her treatment for secondary breast cancer. Again, she had no major side effects and it helped extend her life by several years.

That said, it is a chemo drug (taken orally) and all drugs have side effects to some degree or another - we all react differently even to every day drugs such as aspirin. The real factor which affects how patients react seems to their general level of fitness including the relative strength of their immune system.

    Best wishes
