Prostate cancer

Hi my husband was diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer two years ago this December. He has almost immediate prostate removal with the Da Vinci robot and his levels are still zero.  However he is always very tired since the surgery despite going to the gym and keeping fit.  He is just 72. He also has urinary incontinence and refuses to go anywhere socially because he is so angry about it.  I don't know how to help him!

    Hi Grandmarocks,

I am so sorry to hear about your husbands troubles. He shouldn’t let his urinary incontinence hold him back. There are several things that can help him in this respect. I used to have terrible trouble throughout the night as I was going to the toilet up to ten times a night. This naturally disturbed my sleep and I was constantly exhausted. I have had two bouts of primary breast cancer, so some of the tiredness had to do with my treatment.

My GP referred me to a specialist urology clinic and I was prescribed tablets to reduce the number of times I had to get up during the night. I was also referred to a physiotherapist and she gave me exercises to strengthen my pelvic floor muscles. I was also prescribed incontinence pads and these are delivered when and as I need them. All I have to do is to phone the supplier, who then delivers them to my home in a plain package.

This has left me much better able to socialise. Life is too short to be kept inside by a minor inconvenience. I was terrified to see anyone about this because I was sure that nothing could be done, but it was so easy and not at all embarrassing.

Try to persuade your husband to see his GP in the first instance and let us know how he gets on.

    Hope that this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
