Colostomy questions!

So after a battle last year with cancer, my mum got the all clear. Unfortunately that only lasted 6 months before she got told she has another lump. We've now been told the only way to fix this is for her to have surgery to get a colostomy bag. Honestly this is such a shock and we have questions, and just wanted to talk to someone who may have been through this. My mum has no idea I've started this chat. I just want to be as informed for her as possible. She deserves all my support and more, and I want to be able to provide that for her!

    Hi Lian,

What a disappointment for your mum to have another lump. I am afraid that I am not a medic and I only know about breast cancer.

I am sure that someone else with more experience of Colon Cancer will come along soon to answer some of your questions. If not why not give the nurses on this site a ring? The number is FREEPHONE and they could give you the benefit of their expertise. My best friend had colon cancer and had an irreversible Colostomy bag fitted. Sadly, she is no longer with us, but she managed this very well for many years.

Do you attend with your mum for her hospital appointments? This can be the best way of finding out exactly what will happen to her. It is also very helpful for the two of you to put your heads together to draw up a list of questions you want to ask her surgeon Take this with you to her appointment. Don’t worry, you will by no means be the only people doing this – most of us do.

You both have a difficult fight ahead of you, but your mum is lucky to have your support.

We are always here if you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
