Does anyone have any advice?

Hi, my mum is currently having a long run of radiotherapy to her throats in three different places. She is now in week 4 and is having a lot of problems eating. The hospital has given her some drinks but she is always sick after having one, which is meaning she is only eating a dish of cereal and then maybe a small piece of salmon later in the day. Her energy levels have dropped right down and now isn't even wanting to try and eat cause of the pain it is causing her. Is there anything that will help ease this a little?

Thanks Tori

  • Hello Tori,

I’m sorry to hear your mum is always sick after having her radiotherapy treatments and is struggling to eat.

I had a look around our website and found some information on eating and drinking during radiotherapy that might help.

Also, please consider calling one of our cancer nurses if you feel like talking to someone on the phone can help, their line is open Monday - Friday between 9 a.m - 5 p.m and you can reach them by ringing this phone number: 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you and your mum all the best,

  • When my father was undergoing radiotherapy on his throat, he would buy a lot of ice cream and ice blocks. We would also make smoothies!

He said not much helped him, but he did change his diet to ease the sensation of eating. There was a specific numbing medicine he also got that would help for a few minutes (while trying to eat solids). They usually use it on teething babies! I forget the name but I will ask my mother if that's an avenue you wish to go down.

To help the heartburn sensation my father would also suck on strepstils consistently- he found not much else worked other than pain killers such as endone.

  • Hi tori

sorry to hear about you mum

i am now 2.5 year out from treat os Tomotherapy and radio therapy for throats cancer

i am assuming your mum ha not had a feeding tube fitted then

you can get the fortified drinks from your medical team .... I would assume your mum has lost her taste by now, so just percivere with these drinks ... unless she is super woman there is not a lot she is going to get down at the moment so small amounts and often is the key

soups may also help but makes sure there are no bits/lumps in it ... cream soups will be best

apart from that keep trying to get liquid down here throat .... I found at about week 3 to part way through 5 that Luke warm green tea help.....basis cold water will always be to harsh so boil it first and drink it Luke warm or filter it.....I also found sparkling water better then normal water

be prepared though that what works one week may not work the next

in my initial weeks (there were six of them) I ate lots of cheeses mash potatoes and graveyard, so my wife made loads of the stuff, but within a couple of days I went off of it

shout if you have any questions and let us know how you get on

    vatch

  • How's your mum doing tori

  • Hi, thanks everyone for the help, my mum is doing okay for most of the time apart from eating wise she's starting to feel like she's been forced to eat even though it's so painful, she's also just so tired it's really knocked it out of her. However she's still smiling between the times where she's feeling low so that's good for all of us :)
