Caring for my mum - I really want to help her

Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help who has been through similar. Apologies in advance for rambling story:

2015 my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had two surgeries to remove the lump and her lymph nodes under the arm as it had travelled. She had radiotherapy to treat and her last mamogram (Mar 2017) was all clear.

Three weeks ago she was rushed into hospital with a serve debiliating throbbing pain in her ribs just under her right breast (where the breast cancer originally was). She was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer which has spread to her spine and sternum.

Since, this diagnosis she is devastated as we all thought it was under contol. Last week she had a blast of radiotherapy on a tumour on her spine. Her oncology doctor has changed her hormone tablet from anastrozole to exemestane.

But currently she is experiencing a lot of pain and is struggling to walk and move around easily. She is premanently stiff and hunched over and has diffciultly bending into backwards or forwards and is feeling incredibly weak. So her quality of life is limited to the kitchen and the living room. She is taking paracetamol to try and control the pain but it is not helping and taking so many tablets is making her feel sick as she is also taking a calcium D3 tablet once a day.

Is this the cancer in the bones doing this to her or the tablets? Is this something which can be controlled or is this a consequence of the cancer in the bones?

Has anyone or is anyone going through this and have any suggestions on what they have taken to help with the pain and ease the stiffness.

We will discuss this at her next appointment with the oncology team but in the meantime I just wanted to reach out and see if anyone has any advice..

Thanks for reading.

  • Hi Jo, I can't say I am an expert but I have been dealing with almost the exact same with my Mum. She had breast cancer which then travelled to her ribs, pelvis, spine, shoulder and hip area. Has your Mum had a recent CT scan?? The only reason I ask is because my mum wasn't able to walk in aided for approximately 3 1/2 years due to her spine being so compressed with tumours. She also required a hip replacement and just 2 weeks ago have surgery to inject cement into spine to help strengthen it. She is also on exemestane and I don't believe they had that much of a bad effect. I would get a very thorough ct scan just to check where the cancer has spread to. Her oncologist didn't see it all the first time and took a few months for it all to become clear. I really hope this helps and if you have any other questions or just need to ramble please don't hesitate. Claudia

  • Hi Claudia

Thanks for your reply. I'm so sorry to hear that you're in the same boat. How is your mum now?

Mum's last recent scan was an MRI which was done a month ago. From this they detected the tumours on her spine and her sternum. Since having a blast of radiotherapy on her spine a few weeks ago in the last few days she says she has been feeling a lot stonger and moving a bit easier when walking. Unfortunatrely, she is now covered in an irritating red rash from head to toe which we think might also be a side effect from the radiotherapy as she got this last time. So she is feeling under the weather now with this. It feels like it's never ending. She has one good day when she feels a little brighter, then something immediately drags her back down. It's exhausting.

Mum also complains that the pain is constantly moving. It travels from day to day - sometimes it will be in her shoulder, then in her hip, then in her rib, then down her side, lower back etc. Did your mum experience this?

I do wonder if there is more they haven't detected.

Did your mum have chemotherapy when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer? How long ago was she diagnosed with the inital breast cancer and then the secondary?

Sorry for all the questions.. Thanks for listening. Jo x
