New diagnosis and looking after my mum

Hi

My Mum was diagnosed with MDS (Bone Marrow) which turned into Leukemia.

She has spent the last 5 weeks in hospital having Chemo.  The initial plan was to have intensive chemo for 7 days which turned into 11 days, then wait for her cells and counts to rise, go home for a couple of weeks then have a bone marrow transplant.

This hasn't gone to plan.  She has reacted badly to the chemo, bleeding under the skin and platelet count down to 5 and for a few days as low as 0 !  she has lost weight and is now only 6 stones

The Consultant said it is too risky to do a bone marrow transplant as the death rate is 25% compared to 5% with chemo.

She came home on Monday, how do we know if the chemo has done its job. Can you get a cure from AML without a transplant.  X

  • Hello adelebw,

I’m so sorry to hear about your mum, it sounds like she is going through a lot!

Also, it must be difficult to deal with all these questions. When will she see the consultant again? I hope by then she gets the answers she is looking for.

In the meantime, if you feel like chatting to one of our cancer nurses on the phone might help, please give them a ring, they are available Monday - Friday between 9 a.m - 5 p.m on this telephone number: 0808 800 4040 which is free to call from the UK.

    Stay strong adelebw.

Best wishes to both you and your mum,

  • Hi we went yesterday for her routine check  up

Unfortunately the consultant said the best option was to give a gentler chemo (although that still carriers its risks) every 4-6 weeks

the intense route is too risky and would end in death, he gave ger 18-24 months

shes heartbroken as you can imagine and wasn't expecting that

even though the doc has explained  stuff i think she chose what to hear.
