How to help after a double mastectomy

Hello, my friend's wife has just undergone a doube prophylactic mastectomy.  He would like to know any tips or suggestions from anyone who has been through this as to what he can do on a practical day to day level to help her.  He is great at the emotional support stuff but wonders if anyone has any helpful hints and tips about things they wish they had worked out sooner.

For instance, what sort of clothing?  Buttons, slip on things, wrap round things?  How to arrange the bed?  What makes bathroom stuff easier, washing hair etc?

His wife is a very private person and so won't welcome vistors to the house to help, so any tips and advice on how he, his wife and their two children (8 and 10) can best come through the next few weeks and months would be very gratefully received.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but they live in Norway.

Thank you.

  • Hi RUFC,

There are quite a few members on the forum that have had experience of this surgery or supporting someone that has so I'm sure they will post soon to share their tips and advice. You can chat to members and have a read of previous discussions about this by using the 'search forum' option above as well.

I'm not sure if your friend is aware of this already but I have just had a quick look on our website and have found the website for the Norwegian Cancer Society. They provide information and support and also have an online forum just like this one which I think would be really useful for your friend to use. Just click here to find out more.

I hope this helps and the recovery goes well for your friend's wife.

    All the best,
