Grandad to have a laryngectomy

Hello,

My name is Nicole and I have recently been told that my grandad is to have a laryngectomy. Instantly this has worried me as he will no longer be able to speak after the operation without a stoma. I feel like he is going to lose his voice and I am struggling to sleep with worry. If anybody has any experience of personally having a laryngectomy or a loved one going through this operation, I would love to hear what you have to say in order to prepare myself for the big day (27th March)

Thank you

  • Hi Nicole and welcome to the forum.

I just wanted to pop by and let you know I have found some information on our website here about laryngectomies and the impact it may have on the ability to speak afterwards. I hope by reading this it will help allievate some of your fears and worries but if you still feel a bit uncertain and want to talk to someone about your grandad's upcoming operation do give our cancer nurses a call. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline.

I hope this helps and you get to hear from other members who have had experience of this soon.

    All the best,
