mum was given couple of months to live

Hello.

My mum was given a couple of months at Christmas. For the past 2 weeks she's been in bed barely eating only tiny amounts of soft custard and sips of water. She seems not to be in pain but is very drowsy always and incoherent. I feel at a loss as what to do. So far we have had no nurses or Dr's call the family are caring alone. Any advice would be wonderful  thankyou

  • So sorry to hear your news. It is very difficult to go through this alone as a family. My father has bladder cancer and doesn't have long either. However, we have had a lot of help from Dr's, hospice care and nurses etc. I am amazed that no-one is communicating with you and checking up on things. Call your local hospice care, doctor and oncology department at the hospital. Basically you should be asking them why no-one is helping or visiting and request that they do. Macmillan is also good for help and advice so you can call them too. Good luck and i hope both your mother and family get the help you all need at this difficult time. Best wishes.
  • Thank you so much for your advice. We contacted family GP and now have a community nurse who we can call for medication when needed. Also macmillan nurses are sitting 2 nights to help. I hope your father is comfortable and and peaceful. Your family are in my thoughts.  Best wishes

  • My mum has just pasted after being diagnosed with aml leukemia. The macmillin nurses were crap. I did the caring of my mum until she need a catheter my mum wasn't treated as she had copd. If you give sips of water when not conscious they said I was filling mums lungs up. I put gel in her mouth rubbed it all round biting my finger and sucking on it. I use to use warm water to get the gunge out of eye, took the oxygen off her nose and put warm gauze up her nose then I would do the mouth. Mum was given 12 wks which she just beat. It is the worst experience I have been through and wouldn't like to see anyone else in that way. When she slept towards end, she use to move her eyebrows she could still hear me. Treasure your mum if u need help get it whether from Gp or district nurse. We need them in the last two days at home xxxx
