Secondary breast cancer in bone

My beautiful and inspirational Mom had breast cancer over 6 years ago. She was on Femara for 5 years post surgery after which she got the all clear. However 2 months after that she fell really ill and was admitted in the hospital with collapsed lungs, sepsis in stomach and renal failure. The cancer had announced itself big time in the lungs, stomach and bones. After being in intensive care and radiotherapy, she was treated with Xometa and Xeloda. She miraculously made a come back becoming mobile and independent and even though the cancer had metasized it looked like she could enjoy good quality of life. Unfortunately a few weeks ago she started with what looked like an awful chest infection and was complaining of severe pain in her ribs only to discover post scan fractures there. The cancer in the bone is progressing. The Xeloda has now been stopped and she is being treated with chemo. However has taken the chemo really badly. Been really sick and has become so frail. She meanwhile also needed a blood transfusion. She is supposed to have a third round of chemo on Friday and I am petrified that that might be the end of her. She is extremely depressed now and says she is tired and doesn't know if she can take this anymore. I don't know what to do and how to help. Obviously the treatment plan has to be her decision but it breaks my heart for the first time to see that the spirit to fight this is fading away.

  • I'm sorry to read about your mom being so poorly at the moment, RBrocks. You've come to the right place to talk to others who are going through similar situations though; hopefully someone will be along soon to share their experiences and offer a bit of support. Feel free to take a look around and join in with other discussions happening on the forum, too.

It sounds to me like you're doing everything you can for her by being there for her. If you'd like to talk to our cancer nurses before your mom's appointment on Friday, they are only on the other end of a phone. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline, and are available Monday - Friday between 9am and 5pm.

Take care and keep in touch; we're thinking of you.

    Best wishes,

    Helen
