Worried about what I might see

The other day we got told the my mum is going to have a neck dissection next Tuesday to remove a active lump of cancer in her neck. The doctors said that she will have a cut from behind the top of her ear right down her neck to the top of her breast bone, she will also have a drain from her neck for any access blood. Last time she had surgery I didn't even recognise her, I'm so scared that when I go and visit her she will be a completely different person to who I know

  • Hello Tori,

It can be scary thinking about how surgery will affect someone's appearance but try to remember that whatever happens your mum is still the same person you know and love and possible scarring is only skin deep.

I know a few members on the forum have had experience of having a neck dissection and hopefully they will post soon to share their advice and experiences with you. Our cancer nurses may also be able to help explain what physical changes, if any, may occur after your mum has had the neck dissection so if you would like to speak to them do give them a call on their freephone number 0808 800 4040. They are available between 9a.m - 5p.m, Monday - Friday.

I hope your mum's operation goes well tomorrow and come back and let us know how it went if you get a chance, we'll be thinking of you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Tori

sorry to hear your mum is having to undergo a neck dissection that must be scary for you and her. My husband had one in July last year and then walked down the aisle 12 days later at out wedding so please try not to have too many preconcieved ideas about how she'll look. Hopefully youll get to chat to the head and neck nurse specialist prior to the surgery who can give you some idea what to expect.

    All the best xx

  • Hi,

thanks for the reply, it was really nice to hear a positive response about this procedure.

    Hope your well xx

  • Hi Tori

hes doing well thanks - in remission thank goodness. He had primary tonsil SCC with a secondsry in his lymph nodes in his neck. He had chemoradiation but this didnt clear the tumour in his neck. Once the wound has staryed to heal we have found rubbing bio oil into it has kept the scar tissue supple as it can get very tight and uncomfortable.

wishing your mom loads of luck for her surgery
