Mam's recovery after oesophagectomy

Hi would like some advice if anyone could offer.

Mam is 3 weeks post op from a full oesophagectomy she is really struggling with sleep

Last week after a second swallow test it showed there is a leak in the join from stomach to neck so she is total nil by mouth until next swallow test hoping resting the throat will heal.

Any advice on encourging a better night sleep she is exhausted but carnt sleep.

Hi,
I can only suggest your Mum sees her GP and discusses why she isn't sleeping. It could be a physical thing or psychological. Given the stress she has been through and worrying about the future it isn't surprising she can't sleep. I had similar problems and some mild anti-anxiety pills helped me get off to sleep.

Hi My husband had this op in October and suffered the same complication with a leak in the join. He was in hospital for 60 days as it takes a while for the join to heal. A pretty miserable time with no fluids at all. It's a massive op and your mum will still be in some shock. Speak to the pain management team and consultant who should be able to give her something to aid sleep. Wishing your mum all the very best. Ps my husband is now bouncing about as he was before he got ill :)

Thanks for your reply.
Mams leak has healed but as I type she is undergoing an endoscopy to do a stretching as the found a narrowing in leak test which is making it hard for mam to swallow.
