Advanced lung Cancer

Last week I visited my son in law , daughter and 9 month old grandchild. They are currently living in HOng Kong. My son in law has been ill since last September when he was diagnosed with pneumonia and pleursy. He has been in and out of hospital and treated with IV anti biotics. Then in January - as a result of a pet scan they discovered he had lung cancer with secondaries in adrenal glands, kidneys, lymph nodes and many bones including spine. We could not believe this had happened when he had been so closely monitored for so long and it was not diagnosed until now.

They have not given him a prognosis but some radio therapy to treat his shoulder and back. They have  just started him on a course of immuno therapy. He would like to come back to the UK but does not know how he would stand regarding treatment here. ie would he have to pay for treatment here - they have lived in HK for 5 years under a visa. He has lost a lot of weight already - he is a very small man and today has been admitted to hospital to give him nutrients via IV - he should have been having his second injection of the immuno treatment. He is coughing a lot and finding it difficult to talk. He is so very weak. At what point would it be impossible for him to travel. I believe an air flight affects the lungs anyway. I am sick with worry about them and feel so helpless.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Clippy although I'm sorry to hear about your son in law's diagnosis and for the reason it brings you here.

Has your son in law spoken to his medical team in Hong Kong about this? If not maybe he could discuss this with them and see what they say? Also, now that you're back in the UK I would recommend giving our cancer nurses a call about this tomorrow to see what information and advice they can give you regarding this as well. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline, Monday - Friday between 9am - 5pm.

I hope this helps and that your son is able to continue his treatment.

    Best wishes to you all,
