Helping mum to manage her pain

Hi I'm Tina and my 81yr old mum is suffering with bowel cancer she's coping really well considering her age however although she is on level 20 pain patches what gets the better of her most days is the discomfort of the dragging down pain in her tummy the only relief she gets from it is when lying down but she's very young at heart and doesn't want to spend each and every day resting. Is this feeling common with bowel cancer? Any suggestions that might help would be really appreciated thank you.

  • Hello Tina, welcome to the forum.

I'm glad to hear your mum is coping well with her bowel cancer - 81 is a very good age indeed - but I'm sorry that the dragging down pain in her tummy is causing a lot of discomfort. Have you or mum let her doctor or medical team know about this? If not maybe you could let them know and they may be able to advise and give some tips on the best way to manage the pain.

Hopefully you'll get to hear from others who have also had bowel cancer soon but it may be useful to have a look at the beating bowel cancer website to get some information. Our cancer nurses are also available to chat to about this as well. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline.

    Best wishes to you both,
