Tonsil cancer

My 88 year old grandad as just been diagnosed with left tonsil cancer spread to the neck.

Hes to old for surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. So the only thing they can offer is a mild radiotherapy and this is to help with symptoms rather than to shrink the tumour or try and cure it.

We went for our 1st appointment last week, to have his mask fitting and CT scan. We go back friday to sign the papers and check everything is still ok to go ahead and start the radio, if things are ok he starts monday.

Hes struggling eating now as swallowing is painful but main problem is he as a constant salt taste in his mouth which is making him feel sicky! Anybody going through similar problems. If so be great to hear ykur stories share tips etc.....

  • A big welcome to Cancer Chat, Tracy!

Thanks for sharing your story. We are sorry to hear about your grandad's diagnosis and we hope that he will soon be able to start radiotherapy.

It must be awful for him to be struggling to eat and to have this constant salty taste in his mouth. I hope you will meet others here who are going through the same and that they will be along soon to share some tips with you.

If you want to talk things through with our nurses, you are also welcome to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. They may have a few helpful suggestions for you.

    Best wishes,
