Dad with hypoglycemia and thyroid cancer

My dad is a person with hypoglycemia and now he is treated with thyroid full dectomy after he is found out with thyroid cancer.  After three month the doctor ask him to take blood test, but I'm not clear which blood test  does the hospital check for.  But now we are still waiting for the hospital information for the radioactive iodine therapy. For now he ate about 6-7meals a day.  He need to eat a lot, or else he could not control himself and he feels he is like dreaming and talking nonsense. He will suddenly lost control and he could not anything and need others people help to make him a glass of sugar water. The sugar water contain about 5 tablespoons of sugar to make him wake up. If he drink glucose he is still unable to make himself clear in short time. Normally his glucose level will drop until 1-2 mmol/L. His condition is that he is still working and use up a lot of energy for his work. My question is what should my father take care of his meal instead he is a hypoglycemia that he cannot control himself if he didn't eat a lot and other that he is now a person that need to take radioactive iodine therapy for future ? I hope that someone can help us as we are facing a long problem too with the arrangement of time to take the iodine treatment at our country here and a lot of people same as my dad still haven't get the iodine therapy due to the problem too many people need this therapy.

  • Hello kang,

Welcome to our forum and thank you for sharing your story. I hope you will hear from of our members who have had a similar experience with hypoglycemia.

It seems that you are based in Malaysia and I thought that given the specific issues in your country you mention with getting the iodine treatment, it might be worth getting in touch with an organization based in Malaysia and they may be able to offer you further advice. They may also be able to tell you what blood test your dad's hospital asked for. They even have a helpline so you could also ring them and talk through the hypoglycemia problem:
