Haematoma pain relief?

How can I help ease pain in a large haematoma on my husbands back? Will heat or massage worsen it? He went to the gp but was told it would go away but the pain has increased. We are still waiting for anything, any kind of information from the hospital. Phone calls put us on a run around and promises to call back tomorrow.  We are both just feeling dreadfully abandoned and now I'm going home to him desperate to be able to do just anything to ease this. If he lies down he coughs and chokes and if he sits up this lump aches beyond ignoring.

  • Hello Balibee,

So sorry to hear that your husband's pain has worsened since he saw the GP last week. Has the area around the haematoma become red or hot to touch since he was last seen? If so then please do get in touch with your Out of Hours Dr as this could suggest that there may be some infection. They may also be able to help with some pain relief if your husband doesn't have anything that is really helping.

Our team of nurses will be available to talk to on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9-5) and I'm sure they'll be able to help offer some support and advice on how to manage your situation. It may also be worth getting back in touch with the GP tomorrow and explaining how things have changed since your husband last saw him.

I hope that you're both able to get some rest this evening. I'm sure that you've tried all sorts of pillow and cushion combinations by now to give hubby's back some support whilst not putting direct pressure on the site. Things are always so much more difficult to manage when we can't rest or sleep. Hopefully you'll have some answers to your other questions from the hospital soon and you'll have a better idea of the way forwards for you both.

    Sending you our best wishes,

  • Thank you. Oh the difference just to have a response!! The swelling hasn't got hot or red, but today it was just very sore. I have given him the number for the nurses, thank you.
