Mum - lung cancer with spine tumours

hi, I wondered if anyone can give me some advice. My mum was diagnosed this week with lung cancer and she has 2 tumours on her spine which they are treating with radiotherapy. They have said that they are not going to operate as she has COPD and her lungs are to damaged.

she is 65 and has been in hospital for almost 4 weeks now and looks so ill. She is in a lot of pain, gets confused easily and lost so much weight. Doctors have talked to my dad about getting mum home but my sister and dad talk about what treatment she can have and I just keep thinking we should be asking if this is it and that they cannot treat her but they both told me they don't want to know. The doctors have not discussed any further treatment past the radiotherapy which finishes on Thursday.

is there a way back from this for her, I just look and her and cannot see how she could get better and live more than 3 months. Is it weird that I am thinking like this and they are being optimistic. I am different form my sister and dad where I want to know all th facts and start planning for things and know everything and they prefer not to know and lives each day as it comes.

  • My dad has the same diagnosis and the tumours are on his spine, hips, pelvis and has now travelled to his liver. his consultant has also recommended radiotherapy to treat the larger tumors but that is only to relieve the pain some what. I asked for a meeting with the consultant and had a list of questions that I asked as Im like you I needed to know what I was dealing with, although I did stop short of asking how long he has left.

My advice would be to speak to the doctors and this will help you deal with the situation in your own way.
