Eye pain on chemo

My mother has had 2 rounds of chemo so far for her metastatic colorectal cancer with 5 FU, irinotecan and cetuximab, and the last couple of weeks has experienced 3 episodes of a strong pain in her right eye which has then lasted about an hour. The oncologist yesterday suggested that it could due to the 5 FU, as this can cause headaches, and initially to get checked at the opticians. My feeling/ fear is that it is due to metastasis, but i was wondering if anyone else had had similar symptoms as side effects from chemo? (Really hoping...)

  • Hello Jo1234,

So sorry to hear about the intense pain your mum is experiencing in her right eye. Did your mum follow her oncologist's advice and get her eye checked at the opticians and if so what did they say?

I hope you will get to talk to others here who may have suffered similar side effects from chemotherapy.

In the meantime, don't hesitate to ring our nurses for advice on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they also have an Ask the Nurses topic area on the forum.

    Best wishes,
